Mike Davies, founder of south Essex museum recognised with BEM in New Year's honours list
The founder of our museum has been recognised in the New Year Honours for his work and dedication in highlighting Rayleigh’s rich history and culture.
Mike Davies, founder of Rayleigh Town Museum, was left surprised and shocked after being awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for his voluntary work.
He created the Rayleigh Town Museum by forming a working party who identified a suitable building, then acquiring it, securing funding, arranging renovation and now running it as a thriving community asset since 2016 along with a voluntary Management team and a Board of Trustees.
He said: “It came as a great surprise and shock, for such a small museum, it’s such a wonderful achievement for everyone who has and is involved in its recognition”.
“To say this honour has come out of the blue is an understatement, it would not have been possible without the considerable help of all of my colleagues over the years”.
